NEWS ARCHIVES - DECEMBER 2007

December 31, 2007 - Happy New Year! - I want to wish Hayden, his family and all the fans the best of everything in 2008. I hope this is the best year ever for Hayden and all his upcoming projects.

As fans, we certainly have some exciting months ahead. Jumper will be out in theaters Valentine's Day 2008. The publicity campaign is going to make us all dizzy and giddy, I'm sure. Filming will begin soon on Beast of Bataan and we'll see Virgin Territory sometime soon as well.

Hayden Christensen Fan News was a year old in November and I want to thank everyone for visiting the site and for those who have helped by contributing pictures, information, suggestions and advice but most importantly for your friendship.

My New Year's Wish is that Hayden Fan News, along with all the other fantastic sites dedicated to Hayden, will continue to keep our fandom community informed and entertained and continue to show our support for Hayden.

Peace,

December 30, 2007 - Jumper's Expanding Universe - I never knew about Steven Gould's books Jumper or Reflex until the movie was announced. Once I found the books and started reading them, I couldn't put them down. I brought them with me everywhere, read them waiting in line, at breaks, lunch, anywhere until I had devoured every page. I was totally hooked on the story and the characters.

Now there will be an expanded universe to keep Jumper fans busy for some time. A lot of unanswered questions in the books will be given new resource material to draw from and with an expected movie trilogy fans can also look forward to a growing mythology with graphic novels and video games based on the movies.

I'm not a purist when it comes to my favorite stories. An expanded universe just gives me more to love as long as it's a logical progression.

So here's what's new in the expanding Jumper universe:

Jumper: Jumpscars preview - By way of Steven Gould's blog. See a preview of the graphic novel spinoff of the movie Jumper, starring Hayden Christensen, and read a few pages online:

Steven Gould's blog
"The Comic Wire (from CBR News) has a preview of 21 pages of the upcoming Jumpscars–the graphic novel prequel to the movie Jumper."

Comic Book Resources
"JUMPER tells the story of David Rice [Hayden Christensen], a young man who discovers he has the ability to teleport himself distances both near and far with nothing more than a thought. David's powers aren't just a blessing though--they also happen to put him in the sights of the Paladins, an ancient order dedicated to eliminating the genetic aberrations they deem too dangerous to exist in our world. JUMPSCARS looks back over twenty years as a new Paladin must deal with the perils of the job while honing her skills under one of the Paladins' top operatives--the mysterious Roland (portrayed in the film by Samuel L. Jackson).

December 29, 2007 - Movie of the Day for Saturday - "Jumper stars Hayden Christensen as David, a young man who discovered a strange ability to teleport anywhere during a near death experience. WHat he soon learns is that "jumpers", as people with this ability are called, have existed for centuries. They are able to do so thanks to a genetic anomoly and naturally, people with this gift use their teleportation abilities for personal gain, to escape enemies, or even to alter the course of history. There is also a danger in jumping. If a jumper is highly emotional at the time of a leap, they leave behind a dangerous rift known as a jumpscar that stays in the air for several seconds. People or things who come into contact with this jumpscar will be destroyed." More at BOP

December 29, 2007 - Steven Gould like a proud papa - And who can blame him. Having written a fantastic story in Jumper, the author is now enjoying the process of his books being brought to the big screen. As the publicity campaign for Jumper has already begun, Mr. Gould has come face to face with full size posters already in movie theaters, trailers giving life to his characters and graphic novels expanding the universe he created. Congratulations Mr. Gould. I'm enjoying watching the process too. More from Steven Gould's Blog

December 27, 2007 - Movie to Comic: "Jumper: Jumpscars" - "There's been a comics/graphic novels-to-movies trend among Portland shops such as Dark Horse, Oni Press and Top Shelf lately. So "Jumper: Jumpscars" is a switch: Oni will be releasing the graphic novel, which was in turn inspired by the upcoming movie, "Jumper." " Read more...

December 27, 2007 - Spending New Year In Italy - "Of course, the most that Italians are looking forward to this Valentines of 2008 is the movie Jumper, the only Hollywood production which has been allowed to shoot at the Colloseum. The movie stars Hayden Christensen of Star Wars fame opposite Samuel L. Jackson. The movie is directed by Doug Liman who is famous for megging The Bourne Identity, the very first in the series which made Matt Damon a household name." Source

December 22, 2007 - Factory Girl (2007) DVD Review - "Hayden Christensen’s character seem to be one of the more sane ones. He was modeled after Bob Dylan. Dylan threatened to sue the producers worried that the film would come off placing the blame of Edie’s death on him. So Christensen was simply credited as musician. The musician helps balance out the film a bit. Almost all of the characters are suffering from some major problems. He was actually wise and offered some valuable insight to Edie, even if it wasn’t enough to save her." Read more...

December 21, 2007 - Jumper The Game of The Movie - Jumper is the eagerly anticipated science fiction-action-thriller directed by Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity), and starring Hayden Christensen, Rachel Bilson, Jamie Bell, and Samuel L. Jackson. “When you combine all of the talent associated with this film and infuse it with one of the best action film minds today in Doug Liman you know that you’re in store for one thrilling experience,” said Elie Dekel, Executive Vice President, Licensing & Merchandising of Twentieth Century Fox. “Brash will take all of these elements to create a top-notch video game experience that will keep gamers on the edge of their seats.” Read more...

December 18, 2007 - Curtains come down on DIFF - "EIGHT DAYS of red carpet glamour, celebrities and beautiful movies brought the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) to a close on Sunday evening with the controversial movie The Kite Runner and its Afghan stars. DIFF began with sparkle and ceremony as some of the world cinema's finest stars, including George Clooney, Sharon Stone and Gloria Estefan strode the red carpet on the opening night on December 9.

Through the week, an amfAR (Aids research foundation) event at Bab al Shams drew Michelle Yeoh, Dita von Teese, Rachel Bilson, Hayden Christensen, Kenneth Cole and host Sharon Stone, and later in the week the Madinat Jumeirah saw a parade of Indian stars; Naseerudin Shah, Rahul Bose, Mira Nair, Shabana Azmi and Arab stars; Sayed Badreya, Tony Shaloub, Amin Matalqa, Mohammed Khan, impress their fans as they too walked the red carpet and spoke of their latest endeavours." Hayden Christensen and Rachael Bilson were just a few of the famous faces to walk the red carpet at the Madinat Arena. They were joined by the director and cast members Faith Akin, Patrycia Ziolkowska and Nursel Kose.

And while the cast made their way along the red carpet amid the incessant flashes from photographers, Bilson and Christensen posed with fans and signed autographs, making sure the Madinat was given a real Hollywood atmosphere.

Christensen said: "It is great to be here and watch so many films from other countries. We should embrace the opportunity and I, for one, am enjoying every minute." Source

You hear Hayden say, "With great power......comes great consequence". Click here for video.

December 16, 2007 - Getting to the heart of suspense thriller ‘Awake’ - "Written by first-time director Joby Harold, “Awake” is an effective suspense thriller filled with angst-ridden twists and some unforeseen plot turns that keep coming at a fast-paced clip and in a run-time of less than 80 minutes.

Waiting for a heart donor, a massively wealthy young businessman Clay (Hayden Christensen) who lives with his overly protective mother Lilith (Lena Olin) prepares with his doctor and friend Jack (Terrence Howard) for the impending surgery that will likely extend his life. Rejecting the offer of a surgeon and family friend Dr. Neyer (Arliss Howard) Clay is convinced that his only chance for survival lies in the hands of Jack." Read More...

December 5, 2007 - Jumper: Jumpscars Graphic Novel - From Jumper author Steven Gould's blog and website comes news that Jumper: Jumpscars is set to be released February 6, 2008 as a graphic novel.

Hey! What happened to the other 3 comics in the series that were supposed to start releasing in November? Well, here's the answer from the comic's authors Christina Weir and Nunzio DeFilippis:

Posted November 16, 2007 - "In the meantime, we stay true to our comic roots. We're just finishing up the last chapter of Jumpscars, our comic tie-in to the movie Jumper (due out February 2008). It was originally set to be a four issue miniseries but now will be released in January as a graphoc novel. We've seen pages all drawn and inked and colored. It's looking really good. We're very grateful for the tremendous talents of Brian Hurtt and Jared Jones."

The release date has since been updated on Oni Press to February 6, 2008.

December 4, 2007 - Awake Review - "Though Alba’s thriller has been critically savaged, Roger Ebert was actually among those who gave it the thumbs up. What’s more, if you comb through various movie website user comments, you quickly realize that the public is crying out that the movie is not nearly as bad as most reviewers are making it out to be. For example, on RottenTomatoes.com, the user rating for the film is 65%. Perhaps a more aggressive marketing campaign in the depths of winter would have allowed the Alba thriller to double its first weekend take." Source

December 3, 2007 - ‘Awake’ a surreal medical drama - "It's all about trust and timing the anesthesia. More than once, l have sat in a dentist's chair with a numb sensation spreading in my mouth and wondered if the drilling and filling might outlast that tiny lidocaine shot. "Awake" takes that premise into major heart surgery but also adds in a conspiracy plot, sympathetic characters and top-notch performances for a full-fledged movie."

While many films would skip character development and plug right into the gimmick of being alert but helpless as your own surgery unfolds, "Awake" allows us to know and care about everyone in Clayton's life as he faces death.

As a character, Clay has that John F. Kennedy Jr./Bruce Wayne type of guilt over possibly not being able to live up to everyone's expectations of them when compared to their departed fathers. But it's that very sense of self-doubt that makes Clayton so sympathetic in a real world sort of way. Read more....

December 3, 2007 - Awake - Catholic News Service - "Awake" (MGM/Weinstein) is a softheaded, somewhat sordid thriller combining medical malpractice, romance and over-possessive mothers. Those facing the prospect of surgery in the near future should steer clear, which isn't to say that what transpires is very plausible. But no matter how far-fetched the means, the unnerving film manages to subvert expectations and has a surprisingly upbeat and just resolution. Besides, there's no danger of falling asleep.......Director Harold is fortunate to be working with a cast that lends some much-needed tone to the enterprise." Read more...

December 3, 2007 - STUDIO BRIEFING - "MOVIE REVIEWS: AWAKE Although ordinary moviegoers stayed away from theaters in droves over the weekend, the nation's film critics returned to them to catch Awake, which was not previously screened for them. The movie concerns a man who undergoes an operation, but remains awake -- although paralyzed -- throughout.

The critics apparently identified with the poor man. Jack Mathews in the New York Daily News warned that audiences "must silently endure agonizing pain and banal operating room dialogue while telling themselves that it will soon be over. Not soon enough in the case of Awake, possibly the worst movie of 2007." Most other reviews were of a similar nature.

But Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times, no stranger, unhappily, to the operating room, pronounced it "a surprisingly effective thriller. I went to a regular theater to see it Friday afternoon, knowing nothing about it except that the buzz was lethal, and sat there completely absorbed." Indeed, Ebert referred several times in his review to the poor advance reviews of the film that appeared on RottenTomatoes.com and elsewhere. He nevertheless concluded defensively: "But I felt what I felt, and there you have it." Source

December 3, 2007 - 'Awake': Actors wake up anesthesia nightmare - "While the first half-hour or so of Awake tends towards the saccharine, Harold does manage to pick up the pace nicely once the game is truly afoot, weaving together flashbacks with the here-and-now to present a conspiracy that is dastardly and diabolical.

In fact, the plot has more holes in it than a tea bag and the film should come with a warning label: don't go see with anyone with even a modicum of medical knowledge, because they'll surely spend the film huffing and rolling their eyes skyward.

But the performances are strong enough – particularly Lena Olin as the overprotective matriarch and Jessica Alba playing well above her usual swimsuit-model game – that by film's end, if nothing else, you'll find yourself fully AWAKE. Read more....

December 2, 2007 - 'Enchanted' still has box office charm - Holiday holdovers remain on top - "Hayden Christensen-Jessica Alba thriller "Awake"--the weekend's only new wide release at the domestic box office--was no match for holdover family fare or digital 3-D. Disney's princess yarn "Enchanted" easily came No. 1 for the second weekend in a row. Likewise, Sony's African-American family entry stayed No. 2 in its soph sesh. Proving the might of digital 3-D, Paramount-Shangri-La's "Beowulf" came in No. 3 in its third frame.

That put MGM's "Awake," from the Weinstein Co., at No. 4. Psychological drama grossed an estimated $6 million from 2,002 theaters, according to Rentrak. Pic's perf was in line with expectations. Read more....

December 1, 2007 - Yours truly went to see Awake today. - I went because I'm a fan and that's obvious but I immediately became so engrossed in the story and characters that I quickly forgot about who was playing who. I walked out of the theater with the satisfied feeling of someone who had just seen a good little movie.

Awake is a cool suspense thriller that grabs you and keeps you on your toes from beginning to end thanks to Joby Harold's slick writing and direction. Don't let the film's 78 minutes running time fool you. It packs a punch, no a few punches. Well worth seeing on the big screen.

The first rate cast of Hayden Christensen, Jessica Alba, Terrence Howard and Lena Olin were more than up to the task and did their jobs well by drawing me in and keeping me completely involved by what was going on and then blindsiding me before it was all over. Don't miss Awake this weekend, in theaters everywhere .

December 1, 2007 - "Do not believe anything you hear about “Awake,” do not talk to anyone about it, and above all do not even glance at the poster or ads, which criminally reveal a crucial plot twist. This movie, which was withheld from critics, and has scored a pitiful 13 percent on the Tomatometer from those few who were able to see it, is a surprisingly effective thriller. I went to a regular theater to see it Friday afternoon, knowing nothing about it except that the buzz was lethal, and sat there completely absorbed." Finally! A really honest review.....read more..

December 1, 2007 - Hit snooze on your disbelief and you'll like 'Awake' - "To enjoy "Awake," you'll need to shut off your "Wait a minute, but -" button. It's an improbable movie and a peculiar one, but it will keep you guessing (provided you haven't already read the tagline, which idiotically spells out something the movie doesn't reveal for 45 minutes).

Clever casting provides many of the surprises in "Awake," because most of the actors play roles that subvert our expectations of them. The film is also fairly clever in the way it fools around with storytelling conventions, even if it does end up bending around itself so much you have to make a choice between chuckling at the improbabilites or being indignant that the movie expects you to buy them.

I'm in the former category. I'm sure if I saw "Awake" again, I'd find plot holes you could drive a monster truck through; but on first viewing, I thought it was slick, goofy entertainment. Read more...

December 1, 2007 - Awake will put you to sleep - "Here's the dilemma: How to explain how stupid Awake is without ruining what little plot there is.

The real tragedy in Awake is that you can see how good it could have been, weirdo Oedipal blather and all. The performances are all very solid. The story should have been great. As it is, however, the movie plays like three different stories stuck together with old chewing gum. We're going to guess that a committee did the final edit. We're going to suggest that you skip this one." Read more....
