December 7, 2007 - "Awake" is definitely not a snore - "There's nothing better than going into a movie knowing nothing about it (Warning: Do not even look at the movie poster. It gives away such an important plot device that the person who made the poster should be out of work). That's right, I'm talking about "Awake." Yes it's that movie that has a dismal 17 percent rating on RottenTomatoes.com. But don't believe that percentage. Just go and see this movie." Read more...

Hey! What happened to the other 3 comics in the series that were supposed to start releasing in November? Well, here's the answer from the comic's authors Christina Weir and Nunzio DeFilippis:
Posted November 16, 2007 - "In the meantime, we stay true to our comic roots. We're just finishing up the last chapter of Jumpscars, our comic tie-in to the movie Jumper (due out February 2008). It was originally set to be a four issue miniseries but now will be released in January as a graphoc novel. We've seen pages all drawn and inked and colored. It's looking really good. We're very grateful for the tremendous talents of Brian Hurtt and Jared Jones."
The release date has since been updated on Oni Press to February 6, 2008.

December 4, 2007 - Awake Review - "Though Alba’s thriller has been critically savaged, Roger Ebert was actually among those who gave it the thumbs up. What’s more, if you comb through various movie website user comments, you quickly realize that the public is crying out that the movie is not nearly as bad as most reviewers are making it out to be. For example, on RottenTomatoes.com, the user rating for the film is 65%. Perhaps a more aggressive marketing campaign in the depths of winter would have allowed the Alba thriller to double its first weekend take." Source
December 3, 2007 - ‘Awake’ a surreal medical drama - "It's all about trust and timing the anesthesia. More than once, l have sat in a dentist's chair with a numb sensation spreading in my mouth and wondered if the drilling and filling might outlast that tiny lidocaine shot. "Awake" takes that premise into major heart surgery but also adds in a conspiracy plot, sympathetic characters and top-notch performances for a full-fledged movie."
While many films would skip character development and plug right into the gimmick of being alert but helpless as your own surgery unfolds, "Awake" allows us to know and care about everyone in Clayton's life as he faces death.
As a character, Clay has that John F. Kennedy Jr./Bruce Wayne type of guilt over possibly not being able to live up to everyone's expectations of them when compared to their departed fathers. But it's that very sense of self-doubt that makes Clayton so sympathetic in a real world sort of way. Read more....
December 3, 2007 - Awake - Catholic News Service - "Awake" (MGM/Weinstein) is a softheaded, somewhat sordid thriller combining medical malpractice, romance and over-possessive mothers. Those facing the prospect of surgery in the near future should steer clear, which isn't to say that what transpires is very plausible.
But no matter how far-fetched the means, the unnerving film manages to subvert expectations and has a surprisingly upbeat and just resolution. Besides, there's no danger of falling asleep.......Director Harold is fortunate to be working with a cast that lends some much-needed tone to the enterprise." Read more...
December 3, 2007 - STUDIO BRIEFING - "MOVIE REVIEWS: AWAKE
Although ordinary moviegoers stayed away from theaters in droves over the weekend, the nation's film critics returned to them to catch Awake, which was not previously screened for them. The movie concerns a man who undergoes an operation, but remains awake -- although paralyzed -- throughout.
The critics apparently identified with the poor man. Jack Mathews in the New York Daily News warned that audiences "must silently endure agonizing pain and banal operating room dialogue while telling themselves that it will soon be over. Not soon enough in the case of Awake, possibly the worst movie of 2007." Most other reviews were of a similar nature.
But Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times, no stranger, unhappily, to the operating room, pronounced it "a surprisingly effective thriller. I went to a regular theater to see it Friday afternoon, knowing nothing about it except that the buzz was lethal, and sat there completely absorbed." Indeed, Ebert referred several times in his review to the poor advance reviews of the film that appeared on RottenTomatoes.com and elsewhere. He nevertheless concluded defensively: "But I felt what I felt, and there you have it." Source
December 3, 2007 - 'Awake': Actors wake up anesthesia nightmare - "While the first half-hour or so of Awake tends towards the saccharine, Harold does manage to pick up the pace nicely once the game is truly afoot, weaving together flashbacks with the here-and-now to present a conspiracy that is dastardly and diabolical.
In fact, the plot has more holes in it than a tea bag and the film should come with a warning label: don't go see with anyone with even a modicum of medical knowledge, because they'll surely spend the film huffing and rolling their eyes skyward.
But the performances are strong enough – particularly Lena Olin as the overprotective matriarch and Jessica Alba playing well above her usual swimsuit-model game – that by film's end, if nothing else, you'll find yourself fully AWAKE. Read more....
December 2, 2007 - 'Enchanted' still has box office charm - Holiday holdovers remain on top - "Hayden Christensen-Jessica Alba thriller "Awake"--the weekend's only new wide release at the domestic box office--was no match for holdover family fare or digital 3-D.
Disney's princess yarn "Enchanted" easily came No. 1 for the second weekend in a row. Likewise, Sony's African-American family entry stayed No. 2 in its soph sesh. Proving the might of digital 3-D, Paramount-Shangri-La's "Beowulf" came in No. 3 in its third frame.
That put MGM's "Awake," from the Weinstein Co., at No. 4. Psychological drama grossed an estimated $6 million from 2,002 theaters, according to Rentrak. Pic's perf was in line with expectations. Read more....

December 1, 2007 - Yours truly went to see Awake today. - I went because I'm a fan and that's obvious but I immediately became so engrossed in the story and characters that I quickly forgot about who was playing who. I walked out of the theater with the satisfied feeling of someone who had just seen a good little movie.
Awake is a cool suspense thriller that grabs you and keeps you on your toes from beginning to end thanks to Joby Harold's slick writing and direction. Don't let the film's 78 minutes running time fool you. It packs a punch, no a few punches. Well worth seeing on the big screen.
The first rate cast of Hayden Christensen, Jessica Alba, Terrence Howard and Lena Olin were more than up to the task and did their jobs well by drawing me in and keeping me completely involved by what was going on and then blindsiding me before it was all over. Don't miss Awake this weekend, in theaters everywhere .
December 1, 2007 - "Do not believe anything you hear about “Awake,” do not talk to anyone about it, and above all do not even glance at the poster or ads, which criminally reveal a crucial plot twist. This movie, which was withheld from critics, and has scored a pitiful 13 percent on the Tomatometer from those few who were able to see it, is a surprisingly effective thriller. I went to a regular theater to see it Friday afternoon, knowing nothing about it except that the buzz was lethal, and sat there completely absorbed." Finally! A really honest review.....read more..
December 1, 2007 - Hit snooze on your disbelief and you'll like 'Awake' - "To enjoy "Awake," you'll need to shut off your "Wait a minute, but -" button. It's an improbable movie and a peculiar one, but it will keep you guessing (provided you haven't already read the tagline, which idiotically spells out something the movie doesn't reveal for 45 minutes).
Clever casting provides many of the surprises in "Awake," because most of the actors play roles that subvert our expectations of them. The film is also fairly clever in the way it fools around with storytelling conventions, even if it does end up bending around itself so much you have to make a choice between chuckling at the improbabilites or being indignant that the movie expects you to buy them.
I'm in the former category. I'm sure if I saw "Awake" again, I'd find plot holes you could drive a monster truck through; but on first viewing, I thought it was slick, goofy entertainment. Read more...
December 1, 2007 -
Awake will put you to sleep - "Here's the dilemma: How to explain how stupid Awake is without ruining what little plot there is.
The real tragedy in Awake is that you can see how good it could have been, weirdo Oedipal blather and all. The performances are all very solid. The story should have been great. As it is, however, the movie plays like three different stories stuck together with old chewing gum. We're going to guess that a committee did the final edit. We're going to suggest that you skip this one." Read more....
